Panametrics ISX878 Intrinsically Safe Flow Meter

ISX878 Fixed Installation Ultrasonic Flow Meter

The Panametrics ISX878 is an Intrinsically Safe flow meter, loop powered, clamp-on flow meter suitable for Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas. It is suitable for the measurement of hydrocarbons, petroleum, oils, diesel fuels, chemicals, water and other fluids. Any pipe size can be measured, from 1/2 inch to 16 inches (15 to 400mm) diameter. The ISX878 also boasts the following features:

  • Low power consumption
  • Six button keypad
  • Large integral display
  • Simple meter and transducer installation and set up
  • Velocity, volumetric and totalised flow
  • Economical non-intrusive flow measurement
  • Suitable for use in hazardous locations
  • Option for dual channel version.

The use of ISXDR transducers has reduced the drive voltage by a factor of ten, only made possible by developments in ultrasonic technology. The cost of purchase and installation are also reduced by the ISX878, as there is no need for explosion-proof boxes or conduit. The DigitalFlow ISX878 uses an available twisted pair of instrument cables, fed through a safety barrier, to power the unit. The flow meter is completely non-intrusive so there is no need to shut down the flow, nor to modify the pipe work. As there are no moving parts, there is no wear and tear. This significantly cuts down on maintenance costs. If selected, the dual channel versions facilitates the measurement of two pipes simultaneously.

How Does It Work?

The ISX878 intrinsically safe flow meter uses transit time technology, with a pair of transducers. Each transducer sends and receives ultrasonic signals through the fluid. When there is a flow, the signal transit-time downstream is shorter than the upstream signal, and hence the difference between the two is proportional to the flow rate.

Specifications

Operation and Performance:
Fluid Types Acoustically conductive fluids, including water and most hydrocarbon liquids. Maximum void fraction depends on transducers, interrogation carrier frequency, path length and pipe configuration.
Pipe Sizes 1/2 inch to 16 inch (15 to 400mm)
Pipe Wall Thickness Up to 0.5in (13mm)
Pipe Materials All metals and most plastics. Consult RS Hydro for concrete, composite metals, and highly corroded or lined pipes.
Flow Accuracy (Velocity)

Pipe 6 inches or more: +/-1% to 2% of reading typical

Pipe 6 inches or less: +/- 2% to 5% of reading typical.

Accuracy depends on pipe size and whether measurement is one-path or two-path. Accuracy to +/- 0.5% of reading may be achievable with process calibration.

Repeatability +/- 0.1% to 0.3% of reading.
Range (Bidirectional) -40 ft/s to 40 ft/s (-12.2 m/s to 12.2 m/s)
Rangeability (Overall)

400:1

Specifications assume a fully developed flow profile (typically 10 diameters upstream and 5 diameters downstream of straight pipe run) and flow velocity greater than 1 ft/s (0.3 m/s)
