A Study of Potential Groundwater Contamination

Low Flow Sampling KitRS Hydro were recently approached to provide a solution for proving the effectiveness of a costly remediation strategy. The remediation process was to be used to solve a potential groundwater contamination problem caused by a leaking underground petroleum tank. Such contaminated leaks are not uncommon in groundwater and remediation circles. Injecting oxygen into the groundwater (commonly known as bioremidiation) offers an effective solution to this problem. This process is often costly, so a thorough, ongoing monitoring program to assess the contamination in the groundwater can provide accurate data to justify these costs.

RS Hydro recommended the Troll 9500 multi-parameter sonde in combination with a GeoTech bladder pump, Rugged Reader and Flow Sense software to provide a complete solution for this application. The Troll 9500 is at the leading edge of water quality monitoring technology. It’s robust design, wide range of connectivity and unrivalled accuracy have set a new benchmark in its sector. With up to nine sensors that can each be calibrated in under five minutes and replaced in the field, the Troll 9500 is incredibly versatile and easy to use.

Using the equipment provided the client simply had to input the well information (OD, depth etc), flow rates and sampling rate and then the Flow Sense software automatically took readings from the Troll 9500 sonde. When readings had stabilised, the date (including reports for individual sensors) was saved and could be downloaded directly to a user designed report template. Flow Sense provides a security setting to stop the raw readings and data on the report from being altered. This ensures that results of remediation projects are free from alteration and remain impartial.
