RS Hydro Wins Contract for Sludge Flow Monitoring

RS Hydro has won a contract within the UK industrial sector, to supply and install various flow meters for slurry <a href="http://www.rshydro.co.uk/flow-measurement.shtml">flow measurement</a>. After attending site it was concluded that the Nivus OCM EM and Siemens 911/E flow meters would be best suited for this application, due to their reliability, flexibility and ability to withstand flow with very high solid content. The Siemens <a href="http://www.rshydro.co.uk/Electromagnetic-c-316.html">electromagnetic flow meter</a> 911/E was selected because it is especially suited to the measurement of slurries and effluent discharge consent. The Siemens 911/E, like other electromagnetic flowmeters, rests upon Faraday’s Law of Induction, in which an electric voltage is induced in a conductor moving through a magnetic field. The magnetic field enables the 911/E to measure velocities up to 12m/s, and the minimum conductivity required is just 0.01µS/cm with a pulse alternating field or 3µS/cm with a pulsed constant field. The advantages of the 911/E are a 16-bit microprocessor with alphanumeric display; automatic recognition of sensor type; and simple menu operation.<br>
On the other hand, the OCM EM can be used on either partially full pipes or open channels. In this project it will be installed on pipes that are partially full and open-ended. It is reliable and dependable, able to measure continuously. RS Hydro has also taken steps to protect the flowmeters, with the use of vandal-resistant bollards. The use of this range of flow measurement techniques with vandal resistant protection represents a total solution and reaffirms RS Hydro’s position as a major player in flow measurement.
Latest Gas Clamp-On Tag Flow Meter

RS Hydro has recently won a contract to supply the Panametrics CTF878 Correlation
Tag flowmeter for clamp-on gas flow measurement in the Middle East used for a
natural gas production facility. The CTF is capable of mass flow measurement in
metal pipes at all pressures including ambient. Whereas other ultrasonic clamp-on
gas flow meters use transit-time technology, correlation tag technology is able
to measure flows at lower gas densities than the transit-time equivalent. Being
a clamp-on device, it is not restricted by pipe size or composition.
The CTF878 flowmeter uses four clamp on ultrasonic transducers arranged as two
pairs. Each pair acts as a transmitter and receiver. The transmitters send an
ultrasonic signal in a continuous wave mode through the fluid to the receivers,
forming an interrogation path. The continuous wave signal is modulated by turbulence
and local density variations characteristic of moving gas, producing a unique
turbulence signature. The flow velocity is then determined from time and distance
measurements.
The CTF878 measures gas flow non-invasively in pipes from six to 30 inches in
diameter, over the range of 3.5 to 150 feet per second (1.1 to 46 meters per second).
The flow meter is designed for applications such as natural gas transmission and
distribution, compressed air, fuel gases, corrosive or toxic gases, high-purity
gases, and air separation gases.
Correlation tag technology is effective in gas applications because of the compressibility
of gases, which helps create the distortion of the ultrasonic signal needed for
the flow measurement technique. The CTF878 gives customers the ability to handle
a significantly wider range of clamp-on gas flow applications than was possible
before. The main advantage of the CTF878 over transit time flow meters is its
ability to measure flows at ambient or low pressures.

The theory behind Ultrasonic Flow Meters

End users and flow metering specialists all over the world utilise non-invasive techniques to establish flowrates utilising clamp on flow meters or ultrasonic flowmeters. The two most common technologies used are that of transit time (or time of flight) and doppler. Transit time clamp on meters use the difference in time for an ultrasonic pulse to travel with the direction of flow and against it. When the velocity is zero, the transit time of an ultrasonic pulse is the same in both upstream and downstream directions. With flow, the upstream sonic pulse will travel at a slower rate than that of the downstream pulse. When flowrates increase further, this transit time differential increases linearly. As the cross-sectional area is already known, the product of the velocity (transit-time differential) and area equates to a volumetric flow. It is widely accepted that transit-time flow measurement devices are more accurate than clamp on doppler equivalents.

Unlike doppler flow meter which require entrained particles or solids, transit time flow meters cannot measure velocities accurately as particles interfere with the ultrasonic path. Whereas doppler flowmeter have a combined transmission/receiver unit, transit time flow meters have two which can be configured in different ways to suit the measurement application.

As ultrasonic technology does not obstruct flow, there is no pressure loss or indeed any requirement to break into the pipeline to obtain flowrates. It is therefore possible to use clamp-on transducers to measure liquids with corrosive and abrsaive properties without having to used wetted transducers. Permanent or temporary flowmeters can be used in all situations where suitable pipework can be exposed or utilised. In theory, the minimum distance required to measure liquid flow is 10 diameters upstream and 5 downstream from the nearest pipe disturbance but this should be increased where there are significant numbers of bends or fittings or where bends are in two planes. Where suitable distances of straight pipe cannot be located, mult-path devices can negate the effects of the disturbed flow.

Transducer Setup

The basic configuration is the 'Z' configuration where the transducers are placed on opposite sides of the pipe (typically between 3 and 9 o'clock), with one at a set distance downstream from the other. This distance is generally half the diameter of the pipe but can vary according to pipe wall and lining materials. The 'Z' configuration is generally only used for difficult situations where signal strength is poor (high turbidity or poor pipe condition), typically dirty abstraction water or sewage. For most applications the 'V' traverse configuration is used, whereby the transducers are located on the same side of the pipe at a designated space apart. The 'V' configuration has many advantages over the 'Z' configuration including, increased sonic path length, less inaccuracies of spacing and locating sensors, and shorter setup times. A third configuration known as the 'W' setup involves a double reflex sonic path but is only used on smaller pipes (below 2" or 50mm) to increase the path length.

Transducer Types: Wetted and Dry

Dry clamp-on transducers can be mounted on the outside of any pipe in reasonably good condition: clean, smooth and with good sonic properties - typically steels, plastics and irons. A sonically conductive couplant is also required to provide a sonic bond between the exterior of the pipe wall and the transducer.

Where it is not possible to locate clamp on transducers, spool pieces or wetted transducers can be installed. Wetted transducers can be installed by drilling and tapping the pipe at the point of measurement. Although the pipe may have to be drained, signal quallity and hence accuracy are increased. However, the associated installation and purchase costs of wetted transducers & spool pieces can be much higher than dry clamp on devices.

Applications for Ultrasound including Gas

One of the reasons for the rapid development and success of ultrasonic flowmeters is that they are suitable for the measurement of most liquids including water, hydrocarbons, corrosive and abrasive liquids. The only prerequisites for successful measurement are that the pipe is full, the media conducts sonic energy and that the pipe wall is in good condition. Doppler meters also require there to be enough entrained material to reflect the sonic transmission off. Whereas transit time flowmeters work well between 0-5%, doppler flowmeter work well in the 0.1-10% band.

Clamp on technology has been extensively developed to measure gas applications. Gas clamp on flowmeters from Panametrics are now capable of measuring mass gas flow in pipes above 1" with minimum pressures of 6 bar.

New Flowmeter Calibration & Meter Testing Flow-Rig in the UK

RS Hydro use a method known as wet calibration to test all flowmeters
under 'ideal' flow conditions. The digital output from the flowmeter is captured
and calibrated against RS Hydro's calibrated reference meter, which is traceable
to national and internal standards. Any deviation from the reference meter readings
are then used to correct the calibration factor of the 'meter under test.'

The company is able to calibrate all makes and model of flowmeter between 25-200mm
in diameter using flowrates of 0.1 to 80 litres/sec. We are also able to calibrate
insertion probes: quadrina and ABB AquaProbes in our 200mm line.

Beyond laboratory calibration, RS Hydro also offer in-situ verification / calibration
for all flowmeters that cannot be shipped to a calibration facility due to cost
or logistics. RS Hydro currently undertake several contracts for UK water companies

RS Hydro win open channel flow meter contract

RS Hydro wins flowmeter installation contract

RS Hydro has recently won an industry leading contract to install 100 open channel and water flow meters for a major conglomerate in the UK. Installations will include the Siemens Milltronics OCM3, ABB's new AquaMaster Explorer and the Panametrics AT868 clamp on flowmeter.

RS Hydro will be installing flow structures and measurement devices in remote locations. All devices are to be powered using renewable forms of energy: wind and solar power. The flow meters will also have GSM (SMS) dataloggers that will upload data on a daily basis. Alarm level capabilities allow the client to be alerted of any pump failures or low/high flow exceedances. All installations will be up to MCERTS standard.

The data will be viewable on RS Hydro's own data solutions site. The user is able to access data using a user specifiable login account and password. Data can then be graphed, summarised and exported online. In addition, the data is automatically downloaded to the client's own intranet. This service is fully customisable for user preferences.
