Description of the Role:

As an Electronics Engineer you will work within the R&D team, reporting to the Engineering Manager and the Lead R&D Engineer. You will be responsible for developing the electronics for new sensors and other equipment and will be involved in all aspects of the development process, from initial discovery through design, build and documentation.


The key duties of this role are:

  • Collaborate with the R&D team and the wider company to identify new product opportunities and formulate designs and methodologies
  • To design and develop new products as required and to see them through to completion
  • To design and develop enhancements to the existing product range
  • Provide technical support to internal customers, which may involve site visits
  • The production and maintenance of technical documentation as required, including schematics, layouts, Gerber files, bills of materials, technical specifications, test data etc.
  • To ensure that the products meet mandatory legislation and customer specific legislation
  • Testing of products - installation, collecting results and analysing data - creation of test reports

As a small team, it is beneficial for members of R&D to be reasonably versatile so you should be willing to turn your hand to parts of a project which are outside of your normal comfort zone as required.

Qualifications:

While no formal qualifications are required for this position, it would be beneficial for you to have recognised training and/or experience in analogue and digital electronics design. Applications from recent graduates in Electronic Engineering or a similar discipline are highly encouraged.


Skills & experience:

Required:

  • Confident in the design of analogue and digital electronics
  • Assembly of printed circuit boards including soldering SMT & THT components
  • Using microcontrollers (Atmel, RP2040, STM32, etc.) to measure analogue signals and to communicate with the outside world (UART, Modbus, SDI-12, etc.) and with other digital electronics (SPI, I2C)
  • Developing firmware for the microcontrollers
  • A reasonable understanding of general scientific principles is important
  • An inquisitive mind and a passion for solution finding are key

Desirable:

  • Some experience of software development (Python, C, GUI design) would be very useful
  • Experience with 3D CAD and 3D printing would be advantageous
